Discussion between the President and representatives of the IMF

resident Anura Kumara Dissanayaka with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation, including its Senior Mission Chief, Mr. Peter Brewer, at the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday (18) to discuss the next steps of the IMF program being implemented in Sri Lanka.

During the discussion, president reaffirmed his readiness to cooperate with the IMF in restoring Sri Lanka's economy, supported by the mandate given to the government by the people. 

The IMF delegation congratulated president and his team on their decisive election victory and expressed their hope for continued cooperation with the new administration. Highlighting the importance of building public confidence in the current government for the success of the IMF program, president emphasized that it is their responsibility to act in accordance with the mandate entrusted to them. 

And also president assured the delegation that his government is committed to addressing the urgent needs of the people. President also urged the IMF to consider the difficulties faced by their citizens and adopt a balanced approach. Under president's leadership, they have ensured that social service allocations are effectively utilized, prioritizing essential welfare initiatives such as eradicating child poverty, addressing malnutrition, and supporting individuals who are differently abled. 

The IMF delegation pointed out that past allocations for social services were not fully utilized and shared their plans to adopt necessary measures for better allocation and resource utilization moving forward. 

That discussion also focused on governance and anti-corruption. President emphasized his government's unwavering commitment to combating corruption, a key component of the people's mandate. President explained the steps they are taking to enforce strict rules and regulations, strengthen legislative and institutional frameworks, and ensure transparency and accountability in these efforts.

This meeting marked a significant step forward in fostering cooperation between the government and the IMF. Together, Government laid the groundwork for coordinated efforts to drive economic recovery and long-term stability. 

Labor Minister Professor Anil Jayantha Fernando, MP Harshana Suriyapperuma, and a group of representatives from the Ministry of Finance also participated in this discussion.
