8388 candidates for preference fight for 196 MPs

For the 2024 parliamentary elections, 196 MPs and 29 MPs from the national list are to be elected. 8388 people are contesting for those 196 MP seats and the same number is 996 from Colombo district. Accordingly, the largest number of contestants are from Colombo district.

1,881,129 voters are registered to elect the highest number of councilors from Gampaha district. Accordingly, the number of councilors to be elected from Gampaha district is 19.

18 MPs from Colombo district where 1,765,351 voters are registered, 15 MPs from Kurunegala district with 1,417,226 registered voters, 12 MPs from Kandy district, 11 MPs each from Kalutara and Ratnapura districts, Badulla, Kegalle, Anuradhapura and Galle 09 councilors each from the districts, 07 councilors each from Matara, Hambantota and Digamadulla, 08 councilors from Puttalam, 06 councilors each from Jaffna, Vanni and Monaragala districts, 05 councilors each from Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa district and 04 MPs from Trincomalee are to be selected.
